If you've been girl cowboy hats following all of this bile in real time, on social media, it is easy to miss the larger reality that it reflects. With Trump in a strong position to win the primary, Republicans are engaged in a bitter battle not just about who will represent them in November, but about the broader nature of their party. For the past forty years, the G.O.P. has been an uneasy alliance of social conservatives, free-market conservatives, and corporate interest groups, with the latter largely dictating economic policy. Trump has been drawing on a base of alienated white working-class and middle-class voters, seeking to remake the G.O.P. into a more populist, nativist, avowedly protectionist, and semi-isolationist party that is skeptical of immigration, free trade, and military interventionism.
Until recently, Trump's opponents, stetsons hats and skeptical conservative commentators, consoled themselves with the thought that, despite the enthusiasm of his core supporters, he would struggle to get more than a third of the Republican vote. Now this "low ceiling" theory looks tattered. In Nevada, Trump received almost forty-six cp goggle hat per cent of the votes cast. Today, CNN published a national poll showing that forty-nine per cent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents backed him. (Rubio was in second place, with sixteen per cent of the vote, and Cruz was in third, with fifteen per cent.)
Along the way, Trump defended his use of Twitter and bragged that he went to "better schools" and lives "in a bigger, more beautiful apartment" than those who are considered elites. He said the "failing New York Times ... is like debenhams wedding hats so bad," mocked CNN for its ratings and accused The Washington Post of being "a lobbying tool for Amazon" because the newspaper is owned by Jeff Bezos, who founded Amazon. The crowd repeatedly booed the reporters in their midst and chanted: "CNN sucks! CNN sucks!"
Back on his immigration talking points, Trump detailed a trip he made earlier that day to Yuma, Arizona, for a briefing on border security - and he casually threatened to "close down our government" to get funding for a wall along the southern border. He again called for getting rid of the filibuster rule requiring more than a simple majority - a change that congressional Republicans have said won't magically lead to the President's agenda passing. And he went after the state's two Republican senators without naming them.Those who still remained filed out of the convention centre, stepping outside and into what at times felt like a war zone.
In  particular, white working-class Americans Donald Trump's base were a constituency ripe for this message. To them, they were the real heroes of post-World War II America, the ones who made our prosperity and pre-eminence possible. Theirs is a narrative of an American century built by smokestack industries and sturdy white men with a blue-collar, lunch-pail ethic that would come to define the middle class of the post-war years.White men especially saw their role as special. They were the breadwinners, the unrivaled heads of families, the ones sherlock holmes hat America called upon to keep us prosperous and safe. |
